Have you ever had a conversation, look down at your phone or your computer, and then you see an ad for the exact "thing" you were talking about? On Wednesday, CBS aired Gayle King's interview with Instagram's new head, Adam Mosseri, and he claimed that IG isn't listening to you. Mosseri may be the new Head of Instagram but he was formally Head of Product at Instagram and Head of New Feed at Facebook. So.... he's not new to this!
I know, this is hard to believe that Instagram isn't listening to you, especially when Amazon just admitted that Alexa records you in your home.
But Mosseri said:
"There are two ways that can happen. One is dumb luck, which can happen. The second is you might be talking about something because it's top of mind because you've been interacting with that type of content more recently. So maybe you're really into food and restaurants. You saw a restaurant on Facebook or Instagram and you really like the thing. It's top of mind, maybe it's subconscious and then it bubbles up later. I think this kind of thing happens often in a way that's really subtle."

In additional news, Mosseri said that Instagram is "rethinking the whole experience" of the social media site and fight bullying. One of the new experiences is hiding the number of "likes". 😕
Mosseri knows that removing the like count will not be received well by some. But Instagram wants to focus on a person's well-being and the nuances of their Instagram experience.
So even though Instagram says it isn't spying, and we have no proof of that, you can always check on your Amazon recordings. If you want to see what Alexa has recorded in your home, follow the instructions in this USA Today article.
